A panda debut announcement included a way to watch from home

The Smithsonian's January 2025 plans paired the pandas' public introduction with an online camera return.

Dated news brief · January 10, 2025

The Smithsonian's National Zoo announced that giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao would make their public debut on January 24, 2025. Its plans included celebrations and the return of an online panda camera.

The system used 40 cameras operated by trained volunteers. Daytime live coverage would be followed by a replay, allowing viewers in other time zones to watch from home.

Before the opening, staff, volunteers and invited visitors helped the animals become accustomed to crowds. These details describe the zoo's January plans, not today's celebration dates or camera hours.

Watching without rushing

Try a short observation and name only what is visible: resting, moving, climbing or eating. If little happens, that is an observation too. Watching ordinary behaviour can be just as interesting as waiting for a dramatic moment. Follow the official source for current camera information.
