A blanket, a favourite book and three paper clues create a gentle afternoon adventure without leaving the room.
This picnic is built around a story rather than a menu. It is useful for a wet afternoon or a day when everyone needs a smaller plan. There is no need to prepare food: imaginary sandwiches are perfectly acceptable to most storybook guests.
What you need
A blanket or comfortable floor mat
One familiar picture book
Three large sheets of paper and crayons
One or two soft toys, if wanted
A clear place to sit together
Make a comfortable spot
An adult spreads the blanket away from doors, heaters and trailing cables, checking that nobody will trip over its edges. Offer a chair or cushions if sitting on the floor is uncomfortable. Keep the book and crayons within reach so the activity can stay calm and contained.
Invite the story in
Let your child choose a book and place a soft toy at the picnic as a guest.
Read the book together, pausing when your child wants to point something out. Finishing quickly is not the aim.
Choose three memorable things from the story: a place, an object and a character work well.
Draw each one on a large sheet of paper. An adult can draw while the child directs, or you can share the page.
Lay the clues around the blanket. Ask your child to choose one and tell what happened when it appeared in the story.
Invent a new picnic ending. What would the character bring, and who would sit beside them?
Leave room for another version
Older children can rearrange the clues and tell the story in a new order. Younger children may enjoy matching a drawing to a page without retelling anything. If real snacks are added, use familiar age-appropriate food and keep children seated with an adult supervising.
Return the book, cap the crayons and fold the blanket together. Save the three clues inside a separate folder so they do not damage the library book's pages.
